Arab and Islamic ministers meet in Amman to coordinate stance on Jerusalem

Foreign ministers from Arab states, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia gathered in Jordan on Wednesday to formulate a joint response to what they described as intensifying illegal Israeli actions in the occupied city.

The ministerial meeting of the Arab committee tasked with international action to support Jerusalem, held in the Jordanian capital, brought together the foreign ministers of Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Iraq, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco and the Palestinian Authority, alongside the Arab League secretary-general. Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia also participated, reflecting a wider Islamic diplomatic front.

In his address, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf warned that the Israeli occupation is persisting with plans to Judaise Jerusalem and erase its Arab, Islamic and Christian identity. He called for coordinated Arab and Islamic political and diplomatic action to thwart these schemes and to activate mechanisms that protect the rights of the Palestinian people and bolster the resilience of Jerusalemites. Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, according to a report carried by the Saudi-owned Al-Shorouk, told the meeting that East Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Palestine and that unilateral Israeli measures “cannot create any right or legal reality.” He rejected any attempt to exploit the discourse of freedom of worship to entrench a new political and occupying reality, and warned that justifying violence on religious grounds represents a dangerous deviation from shared values.

On the sidelines, Attaf held bilateral talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, where the two sides agreed to convene meetings of bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including a joint planning committee and a high-level strategic cooperation council. With Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati, Attaf praised the momentum in Algerian-Egyptian relations and they agreed to hold a follow-up committee to implement the outcomes of the ninth session of the joint higher committee, with a focus on industry, agriculture and energy. Attaf also met Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, reviewing bilateral ties and exchanging views on the Palestinian issue, the situation in Gaza and de-escalation efforts in the Middle East.

The participants adopted a final statement condemning Israeli violations against Jerusalem and stressing the need to intensify international efforts to protect the city and support the Palestinian people. Jordan’s King Abdullah II later received the heads of delegations, underscoring the kingdom’s role as custodian of the city’s Islamic and Christian holy sites. No date was announced for a follow-up meeting, but the committee is expected to continue its diplomatic campaign through international organisations.
