Brazilian Police Apprehend Six in Network That Induced 13-Year-Old’s Suicide Live on Discord

Five minors and an 18-year-old were detained after an investigation into a group that coerced a teenager into self-harm and animal torture, authorities said.

A 13-year-old girl died by suicide in Naviraí, Mato Grosso do Sul, on 22 July after being psychologically coerced by an online network, and the act was broadcast live on the Discord platform for approximately 45 minutes, according to Brazilian authorities.

Operation Lívia, led by the Civil Police of Mato Grosso do Sul with technical support from the CyberLab of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, resulted in the apprehension of five minors aged between 13 and 17 and the arrest of an 18-year-old man. The suspected leader of the group, a 14-year-old, was located in Rio de Janeiro. Another suspect is a seminary student from a monastery in Pernambuco. Search warrants were executed in the states of Ceará, Minas Gerais, Pará, and Rio de Janeiro.

Investigators said the criminal organisation lured children and adolescents into virtual communities on Discord and Telegram, subjecting them to psychological coercion and encouraging extreme violence against animals, particularly cats, self-mutilation challenges, and suicide. Before her death, the victim was coerced into attempting to torture and kill a cat, without success. The group opened a digital payment account in the girl’s name without her mother’s knowledge and transferred money to her for razor blades, according to the CyberLab representative.

The National Secretary of Digital Rights stated that Discord failed to interrupt the live transmission, remove the content immediately, or notify the authorities, in violation of Brazil’s Digital Child and Adolescent Statute. The Minister of Justice urged parents to redouble their vigilance over children’s online contacts. The investigation remains under way to identify other possible members and victims, and to clarify the full extent of the network’s activities.
