Hantavirus, which is transmitted through rodent droppings and can cause severe respiratory failure, is not known to be endemic on Tristan da Cunha, but the Hondius outbreak suggests it was carried from a South American port. Looking ahead, the operation is likely to prompt a reassessment of emergency protocols for Britain’s 14 overseas territories, many of which lack airport infrastructure.
