Capital One says anti-money laundering review, not politics, led to Trump account closures

The bank disclosed in court filings that it closed more than 300 Trump Organisation accounts after months of analysis by its anti-money laundering team, the first such formal explanation from a major bank.

Capital One Financial has argued in a US federal court filing that its decision to close hundreds of bank accounts linked to the Trump Organisation was driven by anti-money laundering (AML) concerns, not political bias. According to documents reported by Reuters, the bank said the closures followed “months of analysis” by its AML team and were carried out in line with internal policies and federal regulatory guidance. The disclosure marks the first time a major bank has formally linked AML considerations to its decision to sever ties with President Donald Trump’s family business.

The Trump Organisation and Eric Trump filed a lawsuit in March 2025 in a federal court in Florida, alleging that the accounts were closed because of Capital One’s “woke” corporate beliefs and a desire to capitalise on the political climate after the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol. Capital One has denied those accusations. In its filing, the bank described the allegations of political pretext as “misguided,” saying they relied on selectively quoted documents taken out of context. The bank also emphasised that it has never accused the Trump Organisation of engaging in illegal money laundering, but that the transaction patterns it identified fell within categories flagged by federal banking guidance for enhanced scrutiny.

The dispute originates from Capital One’s decision in March 2021 to notify the Trump Organisation that it planned to close more than 300 bank accounts linked to the former president and his family. The federal court in Miami has already dismissed two earlier versions of the complaint, each time allowing the plaintiffs to amend and refile. In its latest filing, Capital One argued that the revised complaint “suffers from the same fundamental flaws” as the previous versions.

The lawsuit comes as the Trump administration has increased pressure on major US banks over allegations that conservative customers have been unfairly denied banking services. President Trump signed an executive order in August 2025 prohibiting discriminatory debanking practices. The court has yet to rule on Capital One’s motion to dismiss the case.
