
China’s LineShine reclaims supercomputing crown, built without US chips
The Shenzhen system achieves 2.2 exaflops using domestic CPUs, overtaking America’s El Capitan and demonstrating self-sufficiency under export controls.
China’s LineShine supercomputer has taken the top spot on the TOP500 ranking of the world’s most powerful systems, the first time a Chinese machine has led the list since 2017. Announced at the ISC 2026 conference in Hamburg, LineShine achieved a sustained performance of 2.198 exaflops on the LINPACK benchmark, a 22 per cent lead over the previous leader, the US Department of Energy’s El Capitan at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The result ends a nine-year absence of China from the summit of the biannual ranking, which is often read as a proxy for national high-performance computing capability.
Developed by the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, LineShine runs entirely on domestically designed LX2 central processing units and the Kylin operating system, eschewing the graphics processing units (GPUs) that power most rival exascale systems. Its CPU-only architecture, paired with locally developed high-bandwidth memory and networking, draws about 42.2 megawatts of power. The design is a direct response to US export controls that have restricted China’s access to advanced semiconductors and Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem, forcing a shift toward homegrown components. Jack Dongarra, a TOP500 organiser and University of Tennessee computer scientist, said the achievement was “not entirely surprising” and that export controls “may both constrain China and accelerate its efforts to become technologically self-sufficient.”
Viewed from Beijing, LineShine is a demonstration of technological autonomy. The Shenzhen centre described it as a “historic step forward” in forming an independent software-hardware ecosystem. The system is already deployed across scientific domains including atmospheric modelling, materials research, drug discovery and brain science, as well as AI simulations. However, analysts in Europe and the United States caution that the TOP500’s LINPACK benchmark measures classical scientific computing performance, not the AI workloads that now dominate strategic competition. On AI-specific benchmarks, LineShine ranks only fourth, and major US cloud operators—Microsoft, Amazon, Google—operate massive AI-optimised infrastructure that is not submitted to the public ranking, limiting direct comparison.
LineShine’s entry expands the club of publicly confirmed exascale systems to five, alongside El Capitan, Frontier, Aurora and Germany’s JUPITER Booster. China had largely withdrawn from the TOP500 after 2023, prompting speculation about undisclosed capabilities. Its return to the top spot, achieved without Western GPUs, will focus attention on the next list update in November 2026, when the durability of this lead and any further Chinese submissions will be scrutinised.
