
Commercial water-from-air generator launches as student condensation devices gain prizes
A British firm has begun selling a unit that harvests 508 litres of water daily from desert air using Nobel-winning materials, while teenage inventors in the US and China are recognised for low-energy alternatives.
A London-based startup has brought to market what it calls the first plug-and-play atmospheric water generator built around metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The Ark, launched in Barcelona by Ahbstra, can produce up to 508 litres of potable water per day—enough for a family of four in the UK or a single person in the United Arab Emirates, the company says. Tests in Arizona showed the machine harvested 384 per cent more water than a conventional dew-point system while using 0.7 kW/h of electricity, compared with the latter’s 1 kW/h.
The device relies on MOFs, nanomaterials whose vast internal surface area allows them to capture water vapour even at 10 per cent humidity. Pioneering research into these structures earned a trio of scientists the Nobel Prize in Chemistry the previous year. Inside the Ark, eight rotating drums filled with MOF granules alternate between extraction and release; the drums must be replaced every five years over the unit’s 15-year lifespan. Ahbstra’s founder, Hashem Arouzi, expects the price—currently about £150,000—to fall significantly as production scales toward a target of more than 1,000 units annually within five years. The firm is not alone: Atoco, founded by Nobel laureate Omar Yaghi, is testing MOF-based systems that run on waste heat from data centres or geothermal energy.
Separately, simpler condensation devices built by students have drawn attention. Roy Kim, a 13-year-old in Oregon, designed a unit that uses a Peltier module to create a temperature differential, condensing moisture into water for crops. His prototype produced 10 ml in two hours at an efficiency of 135.8 grams per kilowatt-hour, earning him a place among the top ten finalists in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge; the winner will be announced on 12–13 October 2026. In China, 14-year-old Jia Mingxuan won the top prize at the iENA international inventors’ fair in Nuremberg for a passive system of steel pipes and plastic bottles that channels condensed humidity to tree roots without electricity. The device is designed to help saplings survive in arid regions, though it still requires larger-scale evaluation.
Viewed from regions grappling with water stress, these technologies signal a broadening effort to tap atmospheric moisture. Ahbstra’s first buyers include a restaurant in Ibiza and impact investors, while China has been investing in agricultural innovation and efficient water management. The next concrete milestone is the 3M challenge final, where Kim’s prototype will be judged alongside other middle-school inventions.
