Ghanaian international Mohammed Fuseini was assaulted and robbed by a group of masked men in central Brussels during the early hours of the weekend. The 24-year-old winger for Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise was ambushed near a nightclub as he approached his vehicle, according to Belgian authorities and local media.

The attackers, described as five men with their faces covered, forcibly pulled him from the car and threw him to the ground, restraining him by the neck, a video of the incident reportedly recorded by a teammate and circulated on social media shows. The assailants made off with his wallet, two iPhones, and a luxury watch – a Rolex Datejust valued by Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws at between €8,000 and €14,000. The player was taken to hospital for examination but his club stated his injuries were not serious and he returned to regular training on Monday.

Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirmed that three people were targeted in a series of violent street robberies in the area that night. A 23-year-old suspect was arrested and during a search of his home, officers recovered some of the stolen goods. He has been charged with violent theft committed as part of a criminal group and placed in pre-trial detention at Haren prison. His lawyer, Samuel Rosenblatt, said his client was aware of the gravity of the events and expressed regret, but declined to comment on whether the stolen watches were found at his residence. While some unconfirmed reports mentioned a second arrest, authorities have not officially confirmed further detentions.

Fuseini, a graduate of the Right to Dream academy, joined Union Saint-Gilloise in 2024 after helping Austrian side Sturm Graz secure a league and cup double. He has since contributed to Union’s own domestic double, and has earned two senior caps for Ghana. The club said it was shocked by the footage and thanked Brussels police for their handling of the case. The investigation into the identity of the remaining suspects and the recovery of the stolen property is ongoing.
