GIIAS 2026 opens with wave of new models and a world record
Indonesia’s largest auto show saw multiple production-vehicle debuts, aggressive pricing in the compact EV segment, and a Guinness World Record for the largest automotive mechanic competition.
The Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 opened at ICE BSD City, Tangerang, with a flurry of new-model launches that immediately reshaped competitive segments. Among the most consequential announcements were the pricing of the Chery Q electric compact, which entered the market at Rp239.9 million (on-the-road Jakarta) for the Pure variant during the show period, and the introduction of the third-generation Mazda CX-5, priced from Rp599 million. Both moves signal intensifying pressure in the compact EV and premium SUV categories respectively.
Several other manufacturers used the event to refresh or expand line-ups. Suzuki added the Fronx SGX Hybrid Kuro, a new top-spec variant with additional safety features, at Rp333.8 million. Daihatsu presented a sportier Sigra 1.2R with two-tone colour options and a new Gran Max Blind Van variant. Mercedes-Benz launched the AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ at Rp9.8 billion, a high-performance model that also serves as the official FIA Formula One Safety Car. In the aftermarket space, Wincos introduced a “Shield” window-film technology that combines nano-infrared rejection with extruded dye layers to reduce cabin heat without excessive tint darkness.
Beyond vehicle debuts, the show was the stage for a notable industry milestone. The Tekiro Mechanic Competition 2026 was certified by Guinness World Records as the largest automotive mechanic competition, with more than 89,000 students from 544 vocational schools participating this year and a cumulative total exceeding 252,000 since 2022. The record, verified by an official adjudicator, underscores the scale of Indonesia’s vocational training pipeline for the automotive sector.
The show runs through 9 August, with several promotional pricing offers and pre-booking windows expiring on that date. The next factual marker will be the post-show sales data, which will reveal whether the aggressive launch pricing and new variants translate into sustained order books for the brands that used GIIAS 2026 as their launchpad.
