Mexico City and the surrounding State of Mexico are bracing for a weekend of intense thunderstorms, hail and potential flash flooding. The national weather service has warned that a combination of a low-pressure channel and moisture drawn in from both the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico will generate heavy downpours through Saturday evening. On Friday, rain already fell steadily across the capital’s Gustavo A. Madero borough, and meteorologists expect conditions to worsen, with the storm threat peaking between midday and late night. Temperatures in the capital will hover between 13°C and 24°C, though the added humidity will heighten the risk of electrical activity and hailstorms.

The unsettled conditions extend well beyond the capital. In Chiapas, to the south, the probability of rain is put at 90 per cent, with a maximum temperature of 28°C. Further north, the Yucatán Peninsula will see more scattered showers but also punishing heat, with Mérida expected to reach 38°C. Jalisco, by contrast, is forecast to remain largely cloudy but dry, while the central highland states of Puebla and Morelos will share the capital’s overcast skies and cooler air. The Mexican meteorological service also continues to monitor Tropical Storm Amanda over the Pacific, which, while not posing an immediate landfall threat, is helping to pump tropical moisture inland.

View from South America, India and North Africa, the picture is similarly volatile. In Argentina, the national weather service has issued a red alert for several central provinces, warning that a powerful storm will bring up to 48 hours of heavy rain, strong winds and hail starting Saturday morning. Temperatures will remain in the low double digits. Across the Indian subcontinent, the vital southwest monsoon continues its northward advance, having arrived in Kerala on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rainfall across large swathes of North and South India on Saturday, bringing relief from a blistering early summer. Meanwhile, in Iran, isolated thunderstorms and possible hail are expected in northwestern provinces, with temperatures ranging from a morning chill of 6°C to a blistering 47°C in the interior. Morocco’s coast will be cloaked in morning fog, with hot, dusty winds inland.

What connects these events is a seasonal alignment of moisture-bearing weather systems. In Mexico, the interplay of the monsoon phenomenon over the northwest and trans-continental humidity flows mirrors the dynamics driving India’s far larger monsoon. Argentina’s storm, by contrast, is a product of a frontal system interacting with moist Atlantic air. While none of these events alone is exceptional, the simultaneous occurrence across multiple continents underscores the predictable but impactful rhythms of early June in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Authorities in all affected areas are urging residents to take precautions, as the risk of localised flooding and hail damage remains high well into Sunday. The unsettled pattern is expected to persist before gradual improvement on Monday, and attention will then shift to the Caribbean, where the Atlantic hurricane season is only just beginning.
