Indian-Origin PhD Student Found Dead After Solo Hike in California's Sierra Nevada
Vikram Mubayi, a chemical engineering doctoral candidate at UC Santa Barbara, was found dead on 3 August after disappearing during a solo hike; authorities say there is no sign of foul play.
Vikram Mubayi, a doctoral student in chemical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was found dead on 3 August in the Big Pine Lakes area of the eastern Sierra Nevada, two days after he failed to return from a solo hiking trip. His body was recovered from the water by search-and-rescue teams, according to local authorities and family statements.
Mubayi, described by relatives as an experienced hiker, last contacted his family on the evening of 1 August. During that conversation, he shared his GPS coordinates from the trail near Agassiz Col, a high-altitude pass in the Inyo National Forest. When communication ceased and he did not return as expected, his family reported him missing to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, prompting an extensive search involving volunteer rescue units.
Investigators have said there is no indication of foul play, but they have not disclosed how Mubayi entered the water. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, and the sheriff’s office has yet to issue a formal statement confirming the recovery. A sibling, who had earlier posted a public appeal for information on Reddit, later wrote that search-and-rescue personnel had confirmed his brother did not survive.
Mubayi was born and raised in Hong Kong and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022 before joining UCSB. His research focused on using bacteria to break down plant waste and plastics into sustainable materials. He also served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate and graduate courses.
The family’s social media appeal had urged anyone who might have seen Mubayi on the trail to come forward, noting that his vehicle was found at the trailhead. The case remains open, and authorities have not released additional details.
