Two-week mobile internet break lifts mood, sleep and focus, study finds
Reducing smartphone internet access for a fortnight improved well-being and sustained attention, with gains in focus comparable to reversing a decade of cognitive ageing, researchers report.
A controlled experiment led by Georgetown University psychologist Kostadin Kushlev has produced the clearest evidence yet that temporarily severing a smartphone’s internet connection can deliver measurable mental-health and cognitive gains. Nearly 500 participants were asked to block mobile internet for two weeks, leaving only calls and SMS. Daily screen time fell from roughly five hours to two and a half, and those who adhered to the protocol reported reduced symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression, along with improved mood and life satisfaction. Sleep duration increased by about 20 minutes per night.
The most striking finding concerned attention. The improvement in sustained focus after the two-week detox was equivalent to recovering the decline in attentional performance typically associated with a decade of ageing. The result suggests that the cognitive toll of constant connectivity is, at least in part, reversible. Kushlev stressed that the target is not the phone’s core utility but the instant-reward activities—social media, mobile games and apps that drive compulsive checking—that erode concentration.
Practical strategies for cutting screen time without abandoning digital life are already embedded in device settings. Both Android and iOS offer screen-time dashboards and app timers; switching off non-essential notifications and activating “Do Not Disturb” or focus modes can curb reflexive phone-checking. Behavioural shifts matter too: delaying the first phone check after waking, keeping the device out of reach during work, and establishing screen-free periods—such as during meals or the hour before bed—help break the cycle. The blue light emitted by screens suppresses melatonin, so stopping use 30 to 60 minutes before sleep is recommended to protect sleep quality.
The study, while promising, comes with a caveat: only about a quarter of participants managed to follow the protocol strictly. That compliance gap underscores how deeply embedded smartphone habits have become. The next milestone will be longer-term trials that test whether such interventions can be sustained and whether the cognitive benefits persist beyond the initial reset period.

We advocate targeted nutrient supplementation and plant-based proteins to prevent Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, and heart disease.
By citing multiple studies and expert quotes, we build an authoritative aura around specific dietary choices while ignoring the broader protein-reduction meta-analysis.
The 350-study review on protein reduction is not mentioned, allowing a focus on individual nutrients rather than overall macronutrient balance.
We promote green vegetables as a universal disease-preventive and warn against processed oatmeal products that mislead consumers.
By citing a specific reduction percentage and a cardiologist's warning, we create a simple binary of good versus bad foods, avoiding nuanced macronutrient discussions.
The protein reduction meta-analysis is omitted, as it would complicate the straightforward advice of eating more vegetables and avoiding certain oatmeal.
We champion yogurt as an anti-aging superfood, backed by a randomized trial and integrated into a holistic lifestyle plan.
By isolating a single food from a wider intervention and presenting it as the star, we make the complex health benefit seem simple and achievable.
The 350-study review on protein reduction is not referenced, as it would dilute the focus on a single probiotic food as a standalone solution.
