A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman of similar age was found dead in a residence in Värmdö municipality, in the Stockholm archipelago, local police confirmed early Thursday.

The woman’s body was discovered on Tuesday afternoon, and her injuries prompted an immediate murder investigation, according to police statements. Authorities have not released further details about the cause of death, citing pre-investigation secrecy.

A large-scale search operation involving sea police, helicopters, drones, and canine units was launched across the archipelago. Police spokesperson Mats Eriksson told Swedish media that the suspect was located on an island near the crime scene just before midnight on Wednesday. “He had hidden. We found him and then he tried to escape but did not succeed. It was a short pursuit,” Eriksson said. The man was formally detained at 23:58.

Prosecutor Emma Olsson had earlier described the individual as a “person of interest.” Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported, citing its own information, that the man was known to the victim. Police have stated they are not seeking any other suspects. Technical evidence has been secured and numerous interviews conducted, but results remain undisclosed. The investigation is ongoing.
