Manchester United signs record training kit sponsorship with betting firm Betway

The multi-year deal, reportedly the largest of its kind in global football, comes as the Premier League prepares to ban gambling ads on matchday shirts.

Manchester United have announced a multi-year training kit sponsorship agreement with the betting company Betway, a deal that the club and multiple English-language reports describe as the largest of its kind in world football. Betway's logo will appear on the training kits of both the men's and women's teams, and will also be displayed around Old Trafford and the women's team's stadium on matchdays. The partnership makes Betway the club's exclusive global betting partner.

The agreement fills a gap left after United's previous training kit sponsor, Tezos, saw its contract expire in June 2025, leaving the club without a training kit partner for the entire 2025-26 season. United's return to the Champions League this season is understood to have strengthened its negotiating position, allowing it to secure a more lucrative deal. The announcement coincides with the introduction of new Premier League regulations that will ban gambling companies from appearing on the front of matchday shirts starting next season, making training kit and stadium branding a more valuable channel for such sponsors.

Announcing the partnership, United's chief business officer Marc Armstrong said: “We are delighted to welcome Betway as official principal partner. The scale of our exciting new partnership reflects our growth strategy, the enduring global strength and appeal of Manchester United, and our ability to attract leading brands that want to engage with our vast worldwide fanbase.” Reports on the deal's financial value vary: English-language sources widely cite a figure of £20 million per season, while one Persian-language outlet reported that sources close to the club valued the contract at “over 18 million pounds.” No official financial terms have been disclosed by the club. The sponsorship takes effect immediately, ahead of the forthcoming Premier League season.

Manchester United signs a record deal with a betting firm, but the Premier League bans it on match shirts: the club moves ahead of the rules, despite ethical contradictions.

Mechanismgiudizializzazione

It juxtaposes the norm (imminent ban) with the fact (signed deal), creating tension between formal legality and moral consistency.

It omits that the ban only covers matchday shirts, not training kits, and that Betway already sponsors other clubs.

The Premier League's new financial rules reshape competition: Manchester United's Betway deal is a normal adaptation to a system that ties spending to revenue.
