First US deaths confirmed in record cyclospora outbreak
Two Michigan residents with underlying health conditions have died from cyclosporiasis, marking the first fatalities in a nationwide outbreak that has sickened thousands.
Two people in Michigan have died from cyclosporiasis, state health officials announced on 3 August, the first confirmed deaths in the United States linked to the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. The outbreak, which began in May, has become the largest recorded in the country, with more than 18,000 confirmed or suspected cases across 45 states, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The parasite causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness characterised by frequent, watery and sometimes explosive diarrhoea. It spreads through food or water contaminated with human faeces, often via fresh produce irrigated or washed with contaminated water. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both deceased individuals had “significant underlying health conditions” that may have been worsened by the infection and dehydration. The department noted that cyclosporiasis is generally not life-threatening and that deaths from it are uncommon in the United States.
Michigan is the epicentre of the outbreak, with more than 11,200 cases and 193 hospitalisations reported as of late July. Nationwide, the CDC has recorded 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases and is investigating a further 11,500 suspected infections. Federal health officials have linked a major portion of the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell restaurants in nine states. The company issued a voluntary recall, and Taco Bell removed the lettuce from its menu. However, Mexican health authorities said their tests on samples from the Taylor Farms plant in Guanajuato found no trace of the parasite, and the US Food and Drug Administration acknowledged that an earlier positive test was a false positive.
The CDC and FDA continue to investigate, warning that other brands, restaurants or distribution channels may also be involved. Health officials recommend washing all produce thoroughly and cooking food to at least 70°C to kill the parasite. The outbreak season typically runs until late August, and authorities are monitoring for further cases. No specific source of contamination has been definitively identified.
