Antonelli retired late in the race with a battery failure, a reliability setback that also struck his teammate George Russell in Canada. Russell finished second in Spain, ahead of reigning champion Lando Norris, while Antonelli’s lead in the drivers’ standings was trimmed to 41 points over Hamilton, with Russell a further nine back.

The FIA declared the event a “heat hazard” with temperatures forecast to exceed 38°C, triggering a rule that permits cooling vests or additional ballast. Mercedes has introduced a fresh battery unit and reliability upgrades, while Ferrari brings a limited engine evolution. Team principal Toto Wolff has clarified that if the two Silver Arrows find themselves in a Barcelona-like situation, team orders may be imposed to protect a victory. Max Verstappen, a five-time winner at the circuit including the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix, arrives with a Red Bull that has shed around seven kilogrammes, a weight reduction that could close the gap to the front.

Away from the track, Sergio Pérez extended a public invitation to Russell to attend a potential World Cup round-of-16 match at Mexico City’s Estadio Banorte, should both Mexico and England advance. The Mexican driver, now with Cadillac after leaving Red Bull, has yet to score points this season but recorded his best result of the year with 14th in Spain. In MotoGP, Marc Marquez arrives at the Dutch TT in Assen carrying the momentum of back-to-back wins in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
