Moroccan footballer, 20, dies attempting to swim to Spanish enclave Ceuta

Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a player for Moghreb Atlético Tetuán, drowned during a mass crossing from northern Morocco, her club has confirmed.

A 20-year-old Moroccan footballer died while attempting to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, her club and the Moroccan players' union have confirmed. Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, who played for Moghreb Atlético Tetuán, was among thousands who tried to cross the border in recent days. "She did not seek fame or adventure, but a better life and a future she believed awaited her on the other side of the border," the club said in a statement.

The exact date of her death remains unclear, with reports in Spanish and Moroccan media differing. Some accounts say she died on 30 July, others on 29 July or the following Saturday. She attempted the crossing from the town of Fnideq, according to local media. The Union of Moroccan Professional Footballers (UMFP) expressed condolences to her family and teammates.

The drowning occurred during a major surge in irregular migration. Spanish authorities reported that more than 60,000 people entered Ceuta last week, according to local media. The death toll across the border is disputed: Spanish authorities cited 57 deaths in one account, while another report gave 72 fatalities on the Spanish side and 16 on the Moroccan side, for a total of 88. Most of those who crossed have returned to Morocco, officials said.

The club lamented the "high price paid by young people who try to reach Europe" and warned that such crossings turn "dreams into nightmares and joy into tears," as quoted by regional media. Moroccan authorities have not commented publicly on the footballer's death, according to media reports. The total number of fatalities from the recent surge remains uncertain, with figures varying among official and media accounts.
