A series of earthquakes was recorded across the Pacific region on Wednesday, affecting areas from Southeast Asia to the South Pacific. No casualties have been reported in the immediate aftermath of the tremors, according to local authorities and seismological agencies.

In Indonesia, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Halmahera in the Maluku Islands, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The tremor occurred at a depth of 127 kilometres. There was no immediate word on injuries or damage.

The southern Philippine island of Mindanao was shaken by a quake that the US Geological Survey (USGS) measured at magnitude 6.3. The tremor, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, prompted regional authorities to cancel classes for Thursday as a precaution. Philippine agencies offered conflicting assessments: the seismology institute Phivolcs reported an intensity of 7 and said no aftershocks were expected, while the national disaster risk reduction council put the magnitude at 7.1 and warned that further tremors were possible. No official information on damage or injuries was available, though social media images showed people being evacuated from buildings.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded a 6.3-magnitude earthquake off the southern coast of New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands at a depth of 197 kilometres, with an epicentre 435 kilometres north of Hicks Bay. Separately, a 4.7-magnitude tremor was detected off the coast of the Kuril Islands, 212 kilometres southwest of Severo-Kurilsk, at a depth of 64 kilometres. No damage or casualties were reported from either event.

No tsunami warnings were issued for any of the earthquakes. Monitoring by seismological agencies continues.
