
Nvidia Enlists Japan’s Industrial Titans to Build Physical AI Ecosystem

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang’s visit to Tokyo this week has crystallised a series of industrial partnerships that shift the company’s AI push from data centres into the physical world. The chipmaker is working with Fujitsu and Japan’s three largest robotics firms—FANUC, Yaskawa and Kawasaki Heavy Industries—to develop a common AI platform for factory and logistics robots, using Nvidia’s Cosmos world foundation model. The company cited a severe labour shortage driven by Japan’s ageing population, alongside rising global demand for low- and zero-carbon vessels that requires a rapid expansion of construction capacity.
The partnerships mark a strategic pivot for Nvidia, which is supplying not just chips but an entire ecosystem—models, simulation tools and software—to embed AI into heavy industry. Viewed from Tokyo, the alignment serves Japan’s push for sovereign AI and next-generation manufacturing, while giving Nvidia a testbed for industrial AI at scale. The initiative also draws in NTT Data, Hitachi and AI startup Sakana AI, broadening the domestic network. Huang’s visit carried symbolic weight: he publicly thanked former Sega president Shoichiro Irimajiri for a $5 million investment in the 1990s that rescued Nvidia from near-collapse after a failed graphics chip project, a gesture that underscored the company’s long roots in Japan.
The next concrete milestone is Huang’s scheduled appearance at a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry event, where he is expected to detail Nvidia’s support for Japan’s sovereign AI infrastructure and industrial transformation.
