Oil spills hit Caspian and Swedish waters, fires strike vessels in India and Hong Kong

A weekend of separate accidents left oil slicks in Azerbaijan and Gothenburg, a barge ablaze in Kochi, and a Ferrari destroyed near a Hong Kong light-rail stop, with wildlife and residents affected.

An oil spill off the coast of Azerbaijan and a separate discharge into a Gothenburg waterway marked a weekend of environmental incidents, while a vessel fire in southern India and a car blaze in Hong Kong drew emergency responses. In the Caspian Sea, a pipeline rupture released crude oil between Pirallahi Island and the settlement of Dubendi, roughly 35 km from Baku. Swedish authorities reported that oil spread along 1.5 km of the Kvillebäcken stream on Hisingen island, trapping multiple birds. No injuries were recorded in any of the four events.

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR confirmed that the leak originated from a subsea pipeline operated by the Azneft production union, with preliminary findings pointing to mechanical damage from an external object, likely a ship’s anchor. Transport was halted immediately after the leak was detected, and the company stated that further discharge into the sea had been ruled out. Cleanup operations are being coordinated with the Ministry of Emergency Situations. In Gothenburg, rescue services were alerted on Sunday morning and deployed booms to contain the slick, working alongside municipal environment and water departments and the police. The source of the oil remains unidentified; a rescue-service spokesperson told local media that one theory links the spill to heavy rainfall on Saturday that may have flushed contaminants into the watercourse.

In Kochi, a barge undergoing maintenance at a private shipyard in the densely populated Vypeen area caught fire early Monday. Fire and rescue units from multiple stations in Ernakulam district responded to a call around 4.30 a.m. and have been unable to enter the vessel, instead pumping water from outside. Local residents reported that the vessel had completed a trial run the previous day, raising concern about onboard fuel. The shipyard, according to residents, has been operating without a panchayat licence or pollution-control approval. No casualties have been reported, and efforts are focused on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby anchored vessels.

In Hong Kong’s Tin Shui Wai district, a black Ferrari caught fire near the Ginza light-rail stop on Monday morning. The driver exited the vehicle before reporting the blaze at 10.41 a.m.; no passengers were inside. Firefighters extinguished the flames, with the front left side of the car sustaining the heaviest damage. The cause remains under investigation. Across all four incidents, authorities have not confirmed any link between the events, and each is being treated as a separate occurrence with ongoing inquiries into the precise causes and full environmental impact.
