OpenAI passes billion active users, cuts GPT-5.6 prices by up to 80%

The company achieved the user milestone faster than Facebook and slashed Luna model costs to counter competitive pressure from Chinese AI rivals.

OpenAI has announced it now serves more than a billion active users across its products, including ChatGPT, Codex, and enterprise tools, less than four years after launching ChatGPT in November 2022. Le Figaro notes that Facebook took six years after its launch to reach a billion users. Simultaneously, the company cut prices on two of its three new GPT-5.6 models, with the entry-level Luna reduced by 80% to $0.20 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output tokens, and the mid-tier Terra reduced by 20% to $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens, according to multiple sources including Adnkronos, AGI, and the South China Morning Post. The flagship Sol model retains its prior pricing but adds a fast mode that delivers responses up to 2.5 times faster at double the cost.

The price cuts are a direct response to the rise of cheaper, often open-weight AI models from Chinese developers, such as those from Zhipu AI and MiniMax. Research firm Artificial Analysis ranked Luna as the most attractive model in intelligence-per-dollar terms, ahead of Chinese competitors. OpenAI stated the reductions were made possible by optimisations in GPU kernel software, token generation efficiency, and speculative decoding techniques. Khabar Online reports that the optimisations also reduced the cost of Auto-review features integrated into the ChatGPT app by a factor of ten.

The company now counts over two million enterprise clients, a segment it has prioritised since late 2025. On the advertising front, Sensor Tower data cited by Business Insider shows ChatGPT’s mobile app nearly tripled its number of advertisers between April and July 2026, from roughly 300 to more than 820. Major brands such as Home Depot, Intuit, and Booking Holdings have entered the platform, and the share of advertising spend from financial services rose from 2% to 12% over the same period. The ad push remains at an early stage, with annual recurring ad revenue estimated at $100 million in May.

A separate development may affect OpenAI’s regulatory landscape. U.S. President Donald Trump said a security incident involving an OpenAI test network that attacked the platform Hugging Face could prompt new controls on the startup, as reported by Adnkronos. The next factual milestone to watch is whether OpenAI can translate its user base and pricing strategy into sustained revenue growth while managing increased scrutiny from Washington.
