
Prehistoric kraken ruled Cretaceous seas, fossil jaws reveal
The discovery of fossilised jaws from an ancient octopus has rewritten the hierarchy of prehistoric oceans, suggesting that long before the Kraken entered mariners’ mythology, a colossal cephalopod reigned as an apex predator. New research published this week in the journal Science, led by a team at Hokkaido University in Japan, describes specimens of a giant octopus that measured up to nineteen metres in length — roughly the span of a cricket pitch — and terrorised the seas some one hundred million years ago, during the age of dinosaurs. The find, based on exceptionally preserved beak-like jaws extracted from Cretaceous rock, challenges decades of assumptions that large marine predators were exclusively vertebrates such as sharks, mosasaurs, and plesiosaurs.
For years, paleontologists viewed ancient invertebrates as secondary players in the food chain. Viewed from Tokyo, the breakthrough is a vindication of painstaking fieldwork: researchers ground through stone in increments of 0.05 millimetres, photographing each layer to reconstruct the formidable mouthparts. Those jaws, reinforced with a parrot-like beak, would have allowed the creature to crush shells and bone with crushing efficiency.
Analysts in London note that the timing is significant. The Cretaceous was a period of warm, shallow seas and high biodiversity, yet the role of molluscs has been largely overlooked. The new fossils, unearthed in Japan and described in the Hokkaido study, indicate that these octopuses possessed robust arms for grasping prey and muscular bodies capable of ambushing even large reptiles. “These krakens must have been a fearsome sight to behold,” commented Adiel Klompmaker, a paleontologist at the University of Alabama who was not involved in the research, in remarks that capture the shift in perspective.
From Washington, experts caution that the fossil record remains fragmentary, but the evidence of giant cephalopods hunting alongside dinosaurs suggests a more complex marine ecosystem than previously imagined. The study also raises questions about the evolution of invertebrate intelligence and size. Modern octopuses are solitary and short-lived, but their Cretaceous ancestors may have filled the niche of top-tier ambush predators.
Looking ahead, researchers expect further excavations in Cretaceous deposits from Europe to the Americas to reveal whether these giants were global or regional. The discovery does more than validate an old myth — it forces a recalibration of how paleontologists think about the balance of power in ancient seas. As the Hokkaido team continues to refine their reconstructions, one thing is clear: the Kraken was neither legend nor anomaly, but a very real, very large lord of the deep.
