Russian overnight strikes kill at least eight in Ukraine as missile reportedly lands in Poland
A massed Russian missile and drone barrage killed at least eight civilians across Ukraine and prompted a NATO member to investigate a suspected airspace violation.
Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine, firing more than 70 missiles and 280 drones, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. At least eight civilians were killed, including a father and his three children in the village of Radushne in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and dozens more were wounded across ten regions, including Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv. The Ukrainian air force said it intercepted 55 missiles and 265 drones.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that a suspected Russian Kh-101 cruise missile entered Polish airspace during the attack and landed near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin province, creating a 10-metre-wide crater. Tusk stated that while all indications pointed to a Russian missile, investigators would seek 100% certainty. The Polish Operational Command reported that an F-16 fighter jet was scrambled but lost radar contact before the object was identified. No casualties or damage were reported on Polish soil.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the incident a clear demonstration of the need to urgently strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, arguing that it serves as a guarantee for wider European protection. Zelenskyy said the attack underscored a critical shortage of anti-ballistic missiles from partners, specifically citing insufficient or delayed supplies of Patriot interceptors. He noted that Ukraine’s soldiers were performing “truly incredible things” given the scarcity, but that delays in deliveries directly contribute to destruction and loss of life.
The assault came two days after Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington to press for faster deliveries of Patriot systems. Trump has promised to grant Ukraine licenses to produce its own interceptors, though production setup may take significant time. The ongoing war in Iran has drained American interceptor stockpiles. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the strikes targeted military airfields, industrial facilities, and logistics infrastructure in Kyiv, Lviv, and several other regions, as well as cargo ships near Odesa. Polish authorities continue to investigate the missile incident, and Tusk said he has briefed NATO command.
