Ukrainian drone strike on Russian beach kills seven, including three children

A drone struck a crowded beach in the Russian Black Sea resort town of Gelendzhik on Monday, killing seven people including three children and injuring dozens more, according to Russian officials. Video verified by NBC News showed the drone slamming into the sand and exploding among vacationers. The attack occurred in the locality of Arkhipo-Osipovka, part of the Krasnodar region.
Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, called it “a deliberate strike by the Kyiv regime against the civilian population” and said the beach had no connection to military infrastructure. Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, accused Ukraine of terrorism. Moscow said at least 47 people were injured, with 17 hospitalised, according to initial reports, while other figures from Russian authorities cited 58 wounded.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council’s Centre for Countering Disinformation, said that “Russian air defense shot down a drone onto people lying on the beach” and that “it was Putin who killed these Russians”. Ukraine has not confirmed responsibility for the attack, but Kyiv has intensified drone strikes inside Russia in recent weeks, targeting oil refineries, warehouses and shipping vessels as part of a strategy to pressure Moscow into peace negotiations.
The strike comes amid a summer of intensified mutual aerial attacks. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least 377 civilians in July alone, the highest monthly toll since April 2022. Earlier on Tuesday, Russian strikes killed three people in Kryvyi Rih, including an eight-year-old child, and four others in Crimea. The warring sides continue to trade accusations of targeting civilians, with neither acknowledging responsibility for the beach attack.
