Cruz Hewitt, the 17-year-old son of former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, secured his first ATP Tour victory at the Washington Open on Tuesday night, defeating American qualifier Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4 in 74 minutes. The Australian teenager, ranked 612th in the world, did not face a break point in his main-draw debut, becoming the youngest Washington match winner since Kei Nishikori in 2007. After the match, he copied his father’s trademark celebration, raising his bent right arm. “It’s a pretty special moment,” Hewitt said. His father won the Washington title in 2004, four years before Cruz was born. Hewitt will next face either top-seeded defending champion Alex de Minaur or Greek wildcard Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Philippine star Alexandra Eala rallied from a set down to defeat China’s Zheng Qinwen 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 26 minutes. Eala, who had lost to Zheng at the Asian Games in 2023, broke serve six times to overcome the former world number four. “Just being patient and being brave, waiting for my opportunities,” she said. Eala will face defending champion Leylah Fernandez of Canada for a place in the quarter-finals. Fernandez earlier defeated Magda Linette in straight sets.

World number eight Ben Shelton fought through a rain delay to beat compatriot Martin Damm 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Shelton led 6-4, 4-3 when the match was halted for more than two hours, then lost the second set but recovered to win the decider on a backhand crosscourt volley. “That was tough to swallow losing that second set the way I did, but happy with the way I fought,” he said. Shelton, who is seeking his fourth ATP title of the year after wins in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart, will next face French left-hander Ugo Humbert.

Venus Williams, 46, suffered her 12th consecutive defeat, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova. The seven-time Grand Slam champion has not won a WTA match since defeating Peyton Stearns in Washington last year.
