Adirondack rangers mount airlifts and overnight rescues as heat wave leaves hikers dehydrated

A series of backcountry emergencies in New York state’s Adirondack mountains, most linked to dehydration during hot weather, required helicopter extractions and overnight carry-outs between 8 and 13 June.

New York Forest Rangers responded to a string of medical emergencies across the Adirondack backcountry in early June, with most cases involving dehydrated hikers overcome by hot conditions, according to a report by the Adirondacks Explorer. The incidents, which occurred in Essex, Hamilton and Washington counties, saw rangers working alongside emergency medical teams, the New York State Police Aviation Unit and local fire departments to reach victims in remote terrain.

On 13 June, a 32-year-old hiker from Connecticut began vomiting repeatedly on the Feldspar Brook Trail near Gray Peak in the town of Keene. Ray Brook dispatch received the call at 5.23 p.m., and the state police aviation unit flew two rangers to Lake Tear of the Clouds. The hiker was airlifted to Marcy Field and transferred to Keene Emergency Medical Services. Earlier that same day, a 45-year-old hiker with a history of cardiac events reported difficulty breathing and an irregular pulse on Basin Mountain. A helicopter inserted rangers at the coordinates, but the hiker had already moved; his partner said they were heading towards a different location.

On 8 June, a 52-year-old hiker from Potsdam sent a 911 text from the Lillian Brook Trail in the Dix Mountain Wilderness. Rangers and a paramedic reached the ill hiker at 1.30 a.m., administered intravenous fluids, and carried the individual to the Elk Lake trailhead, where an ambulance waited. The following day, a 23-year-old trail worker from Pennsylvania with epilepsy suffered a seizure while carrying out trail work in Avalanche Pass; a supervisor told rangers that exertion in the heat may have contributed. A state police helicopter transported the worker to Adirondack Medical Center.

An overnight operation unfolded on 10 June after a Garmin SOS alert reported a medical emergency near the Wolf Jaw Lean-to. Rangers reached the 21-year-old hiker at 11.45 p.m., provided food and water, and helped the person walk out of the woods by 2.50 a.m. The rangers have reminded backcountry visitors to carry sufficient water, pack high-protein and high-calorie food, and follow recommended safety practices. No fatalities were reported in these incidents, and all patients were handed over to medical care or assisted to safety.
