Suspicious X accounts amplified New York Mayor Mamdani's posts, investigation finds

A Jerusalem Post inquiry, citing cybersecurity data, says accounts with bot-like behaviour boosted content from Zohran Mamdani and his allies, though no official link is proven.

An investigation published by the Jerusalem Post has found that dozens, possibly hundreds, of suspicious accounts on X are artificially amplifying social media posts by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his political circle. The inquiry, based on data transmitted to the World Zionist Organization by cybersecurity specialists, examined IP addresses, posting patterns and distribution networks. Analysts said they were certain that some IP addresses could be linked to the IT infrastructure of New York City Hall, but no published evidence establishes who controlled the accounts or whether the mayor or his staff ordered their use.

The World Zionist Organization plans to transmit its findings to Yehuda Kaploun, the US special envoy for monitoring and combating antisemitism. Yifat Ovadia-Luski, who heads the organization’s antisemitism department, has called for a “thorough, professional and independent” investigation. Separately, Mark Goldfeder, director of the National Jewish Advocacy Center, said he would contact the city’s Department of Investigation and the Conflicts of Interest Board to request access to computer logs on city servers. The New York City administration and the US State Department had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the report’s publication.

The accounts under scrutiny shared several traits: recent creation, incomplete profiles, very few original posts and near-total reliance on reposting existing content. Some accounts posted more than 500 messages a day; one, “SnoopyLima13”, published 955 posts in a single day, all of them reposts. While such activity could theoretically result from scheduling tools or intensive human management, analysts believe the accumulation of similar indicators across numerous accounts strengthens the hypothesis of an automated or coordinated operation. The accounts predominantly disseminated content from Mamdani’s official account, municipal accounts and allied political figures, a mechanism that would rapidly confer volume on a post and favour its promotion by X’s algorithm.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist, built his political rise on a formidable social media presence, with 3.5 million followers on TikTok and 11.9 million on Instagram, the New York Post reported. After taking office in January, he established an Office of Mass Engagement with a $53 million budget, which critics have described as a propaganda arm. The Jerusalem Post investigation specifically cites a 27 July video in which Mamdani said he could not arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York and accused Israel of killing thousands of people; the clip garnered several million views, though it is impossible to determine how many were artificially generated. A previous video in which he called Netanyahu a “war criminal” reportedly reached 100 million views, according to the same New York Post report.

The evidence presented raises suspicions of coordinated dissemination but does not demonstrate the involvement of municipal officials or the existence of official instructions. The matter is expected to be examined by US authorities once the findings are formally transmitted.
