
Three lionesses die at Tokyo zoo as Japan swelters under extreme heat
The animals showed signs of heat stress, but the official cause of death awaits laboratory results, the zoo said.
Three lionesses have died within a week at Tama Zoological Park in western Tokyo, with zoo officials suspecting that extreme heat and humidity contributed to their deaths. The animals, named Mugi, Ichigo and Ruena, were aged between three and 15 years and had been born at the zoo.
According to the zoo, the first signs of illness appeared on 18 July, when several of the park’s 16 lions lost their appetite and became lethargic. By 22 July, ten lions – two males and eight females – required treatment. Staff administered intravenous fluids, liver medication and vitamins, and attempted to cool the animals with water sprays and industrial fans. Despite these efforts, Mugi died on 28 July, Ichigo on 31 July and Ruena on 2 August.
Preliminary post-mortem examinations revealed systemic dehydration and multi-organ failure in all three lionesses, findings that the zoo said pointed to heat stress as a probable factor. A zoo spokesperson told the AFP news agency that the veterinarian suspected heat stroke. The definitive cause of death will not be known until laboratory test results are completed. The zoo’s representative, Miwa Kosaka, told the BBC: “This is the first time we have experienced something like this. Last year it was also hot, but none of our lions fell ill like this.”
The lion exhibit has been suspended since 23 July. Three of the remaining lions are still in a critical condition and unable to stand, while four are showing signs of recovery and six were never symptomatic. The zoo said it would move the affected animals to a private enclosure equipped with portable coolers and additional industrial fans, and was reinforcing heat-protection measures across the site. The animal-rights group PETA described the deaths as “a stark reminder that zoos can never provide wild animals with the control and freedom they need to protect themselves”.
Japan has been experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching 40°C in some areas and high humidity following the end of the rainy season. The zoo noted that the humidity, unlike the dry heat of the lions’ native habitat, had placed additional strain on the animals. The investigation into the exact cause of the deaths continues.
