At least 20 people have been killed and dozens more are missing after a series of extreme weather events struck central, southern, and northwestern China, according to local authorities and state media. The toll includes fatalities from tornadoes in Hubei province, flooding in Guangxi, and a landslide in Gansu, with rescue operations continuing in all affected areas.

In Hubei, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes swept through several cities on Monday night, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 330, Chinese state media reported on Tuesday. Earlier official accounts had put the death toll at eight, but the figure was later revised upward. One person remains missing, and emergency management officials said over 4,800 homes were damaged and 22 collapsed. The storms, described by meteorologists in Beijing as a sudden outbreak of severe convective weather with intense, short-duration winds, were the first tornadoes recorded in the province in several years.

Flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak claimed at least four lives in the southern Guangxi region, where eight others are still unaccounted for. Authorities in the regional capital, Nanning, raised the flood-control alert to its highest level after torrential rain caused a reservoir dam to breach, sending a torrent of muddy water through downstream communities. More than 50,000 residents were evacuated, and state broadcaster CCTV showed rescue workers in inflatable boats searching for survivors. In a separate incident, a landslide buried 33 people in a village in northwestern Gansu province on Tuesday morning. Local officials said 17 were pulled from the debris, but five later died, and 12 remain missing.

Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing across all three regions, with President Xi Jinping ordering an “all-out” response, according to state media. The toll is considered provisional as search teams continue to work in difficult conditions.
