Record April yen intervention confirmed as US-Japan July action revealed

Ministry of Finance data confirm the largest single-day yen-buying operation on record, and reveal how Washington financed its part of the July joint intervention.

Ministry of Finance data released on Friday confirmed that Japanese authorities bought ¥6,278.7bn for dollars on April 30 — the largest yen-buying operation in a single day on record and Japan's first currency intervention since July 2024. The dollar plunged from above ¥160 to below ¥156 that night. The April-May operations, conducted as "stealth" interventions without immediate announcements, totalled ¥11,734.9bn across three days.

The disclosure follows the coordinated US-Japan action on July 30-31, the first concerted yen-buying operation by the two governments in 28 years. The Financial Times reported that Washington financed its share by selling euros from reserves rather than dollars — a choice intended, market analysis suggests, to shield the US Treasury market from a Japanese sell-off of dollar debt. The European Central Bank was not informed until after the trades were completed; president Christine Lagarde and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke the following Saturday, and senior ECB officials were said to consider the move an unprecedented break with cooperation practice, one person familiar with European policy calling it "very striking and sad."

The yen had touched ¥163.99 on July 23, its weakest in about 39 years and eight months. After the joint action, the currency strengthened more than 400 pips (-2.4%) in a single day, with a further 200-pip decline on July 31, before recovering from about ¥155 to near ¥158. Market estimates put the size of the July interventions at upward of ¥10tn, though reserves data for end-July did not yet reflect them because of settlement timing. The strain had spread across the region before the action: the Korean won had weakened to around 1,450 per dollar and the yuan approached 7.3.

Both US and Japanese officials have said they are prepared to intervene again if needed. The Bank of Japan, which raised its policy rate to 1% in June, kept the rate unchanged at its most recent meeting but strongly hinted at a possible increase by year-end — a signal markets are watching as a potential anchor for the yen's longer-term direction.
