The two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran was thrown into acute jeopardy on Sunday after an American destroyer fired upon and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman, triggering a swift retaliatory drone strike and plunging diplomatic efforts into disarray. The guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the M/V Touska as it steamed towards the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, the US Central Command confirmed, after the crew ignored repeated radio warnings over six hours to halt for violating the naval blockade imposed by Washington. On President Trump’s orders, the warship blew a hole in the vessel’s engine room, disabling it, and US Marines boarded the ship. Tehran immediately condemned the seizure as an “act of armed piracy” and a violation of the ceasefire. Iranian officials said American forces had destroyed the Touska’s navigation equipment before boarding. The episode dramatically reversed a brief Iranian decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz; the waterway was reclosed, with Tehran insisting it would remain blocked as long as the US blockade of its ports persists. Viewed from Moscow, Russian media highlighted that the Touska was returning from the Chinese port of Gaolan, a known hub for shipping sodium perchlorate, a key ingredient in solid rocket fuel – underscoring the strategic supply-chain tensions underlying the confrontation.
