The United States launched a self-defence strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island early Wednesday after its forces intercepted a wave of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones targeting Kuwait, Bahrain and civilian shipping in the Gulf. US Central Command said two missiles aimed at Kuwait fell short or broke apart, while three headed for Bahrain were shot down by American and local air defences. Washington also destroyed three one-way attack drones that Iran had launched toward commercial vessels in international waters. The strikes on Qeshm—a strategic island near the Strait of Hormuz—targeted a military ground control station used for drone operations, in what CENTCOM described as retaliation for Tehran’s “attempted attacks across the Middle East”.

The exchange marked the latest flare-up in a conflict that has simmered since late February, when the US and Israel first struck Iranian positions. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed their missiles had hit US bases in Kuwait and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, assertions CENTCOM dismissed as “false”. From Tehran’s perspective, the operation was a justified response to what it called a “flagrant American aggression” on Qeshm, and it warned of more severe blows if US attacks continue. Kuwait’s military confirmed its air defences intercepted hostile projectiles and urged residents to avoid debris, while Bahrain sounded sirens and directed citizens to safe spaces.

Earlier on Tuesday, US forces disabled the empty Botswana-flagged tanker M/T Lexie with a Hellfire missile after it ignored repeated warnings and attempted to breach the maritime blockade of Iranian ports enforced since April 13. The crew was not harmed, but the engine room strike underscored Washington’s determination to choke off maritime access to Iran’s main oil terminal at Kharg Island. More than 120 vessels have been diverted or stopped since the blockade began, and oil prices jumped over 1% on the renewed tensions, reflecting market fears over sustained disruption of Hormuz traffic.

Diplomatically, the outlook is bleak. Talks between Washington and Tehran are said to be at a stalemate, with no breakthrough visible despite more than three months of hostilities. Analysts in European capitals note that each cycle of retaliation deepens mutual mistrust and narrows the space for mediators. From the Gulf Arab perspective, the repeated attacks on their territories—whether intercepted or not—constitute an alarming spillover that threatens their security and economic stability, intensifying pressure on the US to maintain a robust defensive posture while also seeking an off-ramp.

With Iran vowing a “much stronger” response to any further US strikes and CENTCOM insisting it will continue to defend its forces and partners, the pattern of tit-for-tat violence is likely to persist. The conflict is increasingly testing the resilience of regional alliances and global energy supply chains, as the blockade’s toll on Iranian exports meets Western sanctions. For now, the Strait of Hormuz remains a fault line, and each intercepted missile brings the spectre of a wider conflagration closer.
