Hours later, officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department, conducting a welfare check at his Martin Street apartment, found the 29-year-old dead. No foul play is suspected, the department said; the cause awaits an autopsy.

The death unmoored a figure who, in a few short years, had become one of the most sought-after architects of modern hip-hop. Born in South Memphis, Keith began making beats at 14, uploading them to YouTube and DatPiff. By 2018, his production on BlocBoy JB's "Look Alive" — featuring a verse from Drake — had cracked the Billboard top five, and his co-production on Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode" would spend weeks at No. 1, earning a Grammy nomination and cementing a sound: bass-heavy, dark, unmistakably Memphis. According to Billboard, he accumulated 11 top-10 Hot 100 entries and four No. 1 singles, working across the spectrum from Beyoncé's "Before I Let Go" to Eminem's "Not Alike" and, more recently, Sexyy Red's breakout "Pound Town."

Keith's rise was inseparable from the city that shaped him. His signature producer tag — "Tay Keith, fuck these n****s up" — became a kind of regional watermark, a declaration of Memphis's arrival in the mainstream. He met BlocBoy JB at 14, and their partnership would later propel both into the national spotlight. Even as his credits multiplied, Keith remained tethered to Tennessee: he graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in December 2018, the same month "Sicko Mode" topped the charts, and later founded DRUMATIZED, a Nashville studio and label that, according to Billboard, became only the second recording studio in the city owned by an African American. Forbes placed him and his manager Cambrian Strong on its 30 Under 30 Music list in 2024. Yet behind the accolades, those close to him noted a private weight. His mother died in 2021, a loss that several reports suggest marked a difficult turn in his personal life.

Yeen tell me you was leaving." Fellow producer Hitkidd, who had known Keith since 2010, said simply, "I ain't even got the words."
