Joao Pedro Double Inspires Chelsea to 3-0 Victory Over AC Milan in Jakarta

The Brazilian forward scored either side of half-time and Moises Caicedo added a spectacular third as Xabi Alonso’s side claimed the Indonesia Super Cup in front of 40,856 fans at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win over AC Milan in a pre-season friendly in Jakarta on Saturday, lifting the Indonesia Super Cup trophy with a display of clinical finishing and defensive solidity. Joao Pedro struck twice and captain Moises Caicedo added a fine volley as the London club controlled much of the contest at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

The opening goal arrived in first-half stoppage time when Pedro glanced a header from Caicedo’s in-swinging corner past goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani. Just seconds after the restart, the Brazilian doubled the lead, escaping his marker at the far post to guide Pedro Neto’s cross into the net. Caicedo then made it 3-0 in the 50th minute, meeting a half-cleared corner with a volley from the edge of the area that flew into the corner off the outside of his right boot.

The result halted a two-match losing run for Chelsea, who had fallen to Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus after opening their tour with a 6-4 win over Western Sydney. Head coach Xabi Alonso, who praised the “fantastic” support from the club’s fans in Indonesia, said the performance underlined his squad’s flexibility. “We want to be very versatile in our approach and systems,” he said. “We want to be a team that is difficult to predict.”

For AC Milan, under new manager Ruben Amorim, the defeat exposed familiar frailties. Amorim acknowledged his side “did not play very well” but stressed that the match provided valuable lessons before the Serie A campaign. “There are many things we have to correct, but that is normal,” he said. Milan had drawn their two previous friendlies, against Celtic and Inter Milan.

Chelsea will have little time to rest, facing Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta’zim on Sunday in Iskandar Puteri. AC Milan’s next assignment is a meeting with Manchester United in Wrocław, Poland, on 15 August.
