Anthropic Releases Once-Withheld AI Model, Reigniting a Global Safety Standoff

Anthropic abruptly reversed course on Tuesday, releasing a version of its most powerful and controversial artificial intelligence model to the general public after having declared it too dangerous to distribute just two months earlier. The new system, called Claude Fable 5, is a deliberately constrained variant of the Claude Mythos architecture that rattled governments, financial institutions, and the technology sector when it was privately previewed in April. Alongside the public launch, the company also unveiled Mythos 5, a full-capability model available only to a tightly restricted circle of existing partners and, in a move certain to intensify geopolitical scrutiny, to the United States government under a newly formalised collaboration.

The release of Claude Fable 5 marks a major AI milestone, but its unprecedented restrictions highlight the growing tension between capability and control. Industry observers question whether such self-imposed limits will stifle innovation or simply become a new standard for responsible deployment.

Continental European press+0.20

Anthropic’s decision to limit access to its most powerful model reflects a maturing understanding of AI risks, aligning with European regulatory approaches. This move may set a precedent for how frontier models are released, emphasizing safety over speed.

The Gulf press notes the irony of an AI company declaring its own creation too powerful for the public, framing it as a new twist in the global tech narrative. With characteristic detachment, they view it as another chapter in the West’s self-regulatory drama, neither alarm nor celebration.
