The latest escalation has rendered the much-heralded ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah all but meaningless, as Israeli warplanes on Thursday bombed dozens of towns across southern and eastern Lebanon, killing at least six people, and the militant group responded with drone attacks that sent sirens wailing across northern Israel. The United Nations secretary-general, António Guterres, warned that the region has been witnessing a “serious escalation” since March, with Israel intensifying its military operations on multiple fronts.

Lebanese security sources reported that four civilians died in a strike on the village of Abbasiyeh, while two others were killed in separate attacks on Tyre and Baalbek. An additional strike on Sohmor in the West Bekaa valley killed one person, and at least seven more were wounded in Abbasiyeh. The Israeli military confirmed it had seized control of the Wadi al-Saluki area, a strategic strip between the Litani River and the border, and claimed to have killed Hezbollah fighters who attempted to flee through a tunnel. Six Israeli soldiers were also wounded in clashes in the south, according to army statements.

From its side, Hezbollah maintained that it was acting in retaliation for repeated Israeli violations of the truce, launching explosive-laden drones at Israeli positions and settlements. Air-raid sirens rang out in the northern Israeli community of al-Mutilla shortly before dawn, with residents instructed to take shelter. The group declared that its operations were a direct response to Israel’s ongoing airstrikes and ground incursions, which have continued despite the internationally brokered pause. Viewed from Beirut, the ceasefire appears to be honoured only in the breach, with Israeli forces carrying out near-daily attacks that have killed over 3,700 people since the conflict’s onset, according to Lebanese tallies.

This pattern of escalating violence is not confined to Lebanon. Analysts in London point to a broader unravelling of diplomatic stopgaps across the region. In Gaza, Israeli forces have seized additional territory and killed senior Hamas militants, while the United States and Iran recently traded direct aerial strikes. The titular ceasefires announced in recent weeks have been met with widespread scepticism, as the fighting continues unabated on each front.

With no meaningful enforcement mechanism and both sides locked in a cycle of reprisal, the prospects for a durable halt to hostilities appear remote. The Israeli government appears determined to degrade Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, while the group shows no sign of backing down. As the death toll mounts and the humanitarian situation deteriorates, the international community has so far proved unable to mediate a genuine ceasefire, leaving the region dangerously adrift.
