
Chronic money worries accelerate brain ageing, UCL-led study of 2,759 Britons finds
People who endured persistent financial hardship from young adulthood showed worse memory and processing speed by 53, and greater brain shrinkage by 70, according to research published in Innovation in Aging.
Sustained financial strain does not merely deplete a bank account; it appears to leave a measurable imprint on the brain, accelerating age-related cognitive decline. That is the central finding of a study led by University College London that tracked 2,759 British adults from birth into their seventies, using data from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development, also known as the 1946 British cohort. Researchers found that individuals exposed to persistent low income or repeated difficulty paying bills during early and mid-adulthood performed worse on tests of verbal memory and information-processing speed by the age of 53. Brain scans of a subgroup taken around age 70 revealed greater ventricular volume—a marker of cerebral atrophy—in those who had faced long-term financial adversity.
The study, published in the journal Innovation in Aging, is unusual for its duration. Household income was recorded when participants were 26, 43 and 53; financial hardship was assessed through self-reported ability to live on one’s income and pay regular expenses between ages 36 and 53. About 16 per cent of the sample experienced persistent low income, defined as being in the bottom fifth of earners at two or more of the three measurement points, while 12 per cent reported prolonged financial difficulties. The cognitive deficits at 53 remained significant even after adjusting for childhood cognitive ability, education, early-life mental health and family socioeconomic background. The apparent slower memory decline observed in some financially stressed participants between 53 and 69 was not protective: they had simply started from a lower baseline, leaving less room for further deterioration.
Men appeared especially vulnerable. The link between financial adversity and poorer later-life brain health was predominantly seen in males, a pattern the authors suggest may reflect higher rates of smoking and alcohol misuse among disadvantaged men, or the particular stress experienced by those who were primary breadwinners in this generation. Carriers of the APOE-ε4 genetic variant, which raises Alzheimer’s risk, also seemed more susceptible to the cognitive toll of financial stress.
“Most studies on cognitive ageing look at financial hardship at only a single point in time. Our study, using several decades of data, allows us to see that it is the accumulation of hardship over many years that is linked to the worst cognitive health outcomes, rather than occasional episodes of adversity,” said corresponding author Dr Jacques Wels. Senior author Professor Praveetha Patalay added that the findings suggest supporting people facing financial hardship and reducing chronic poverty could help prevent future cognitive decline and dementia cases. The research is observational and does not establish causation, but it adds weight to the hypothesis that chronic stress-driven inflammation may be one pathway through which economic disadvantage becomes biologically embedded.
