Cyclonic Circulation Threatens Indonesia as Oppressive Heat Builds Across Eastern Mediterranean
BMKG warns of extreme rain across Indonesia on Sunday, while hot dry air grips the Levant and scattered storms lash Morocco.
Indonesia faces the most volatile weather on a day that sees cyclonic circulation systems churning off western Sumatra and in the Makassar Strait, conditions that the national meteorological agency BMKG warns will trigger significant cloud growth and the potential for very heavy rain across much of the archipelago. From Jakarta to Jayapura, the forecast is dominated by light to moderate rain, but the concern centres on the possibility of extreme downpours, particularly in regions where the cyclonic influence is strongest. BMKG’s Diah Ayu noted that major cities from Medan in the west to Kupang in the east will see rainfall, with Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya all bracing for wet conditions.
Across the Indonesian capital, the picture is one of persistent dampness rather than dramatic storms. BMKG predicts light rain across all five administrative areas on Sunday afternoon, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius and humidity climbing as high as 98 percent in some districts. The Jakarta disaster management agency has urged residents to remain vigilant against localised flooding, a recurring risk in a city where drainage infrastructure remains overtaxed. Further east, the pattern holds: Central Papua is expected to see widespread light rain, with Mimika the sole district forecast to remain merely cloudy, while all of Papua province is set for rain, temperatures hovering between 22 and 30 degrees.
Viewed from the eastern Mediterranean, the meteorological picture could hardly be more different. A hot and dry air mass is settling over Lebanon and Israel, pushing temperatures significantly above the seasonal average. In Beirut, the mercury is forecast to reach the high twenties, with winds gusting up to 75 km/h in northern areas and layers of dust reducing air quality. The Israeli Meteorological Service warns of moderate to high air pollution in the Negev and Arava during the afternoon, a familiar hazard when desert winds combine with unseasonable heat. Conditions are expected to moderate by Monday as a cooler, moister air mass arrives.
Morocco occupies something of a middle ground meteorologically. The Direction Générale de la Météorologie forecasts low cloud and local drizzle over northern and central plains in the morning, followed by scattered thunderstorms over the High and Middle Atlas ranges and the eastern Rif. Moderate to strong winds will kick up dust across central regions and the southern provinces, while temperatures rise across the board. In South America, Venezuela sees a calmer picture: Maracay is expected to enjoy a dry Sunday with a high of 32 degrees, light easterly winds, and humidity around 82 percent.
Looking ahead, the contrast between the saturated atmosphere of maritime Southeast Asia and the dusty heat of the eastern Mediterranean underscores the seasonal transitions underway. For Indonesia, the persistence of cyclonic activity suggests that the current volatile pattern may extend into late May, a development that disaster management officials are watching closely. In the Levant, the brief spike in temperatures is a reminder that the summer heat is only weeks away. Across the globe, weather agencies continue to refine their forecasts as atmospheric instability increases with the approaching northern summer.

Iranian state-aligned media report that a powerful storm front has placed 21 provinces on orange alert, warning of heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. The coverage emphasizes the need for caution, advising citizens to avoid travel and stay away from riverbeds due to flood risk. The tone is urgent and practical, focusing on preparedness.
Media from the Arab Levant and Maghreb report contrasting weather: Morocco faces unstable conditions with rain, snow, and cold air masses, while Lebanon enjoys stable spring weather with temperatures above seasonal norms and gusty winds. The coverage is descriptive and matter-of-fact, explaining the meteorological causes behind the differences. No urgent warnings are issued; instead, the tone is calm and informative.
