Glen Hansard, the Irish musician and actor who won an Academy Award for the song “Falling Slowly,” died in a motorcycle crash in Dublin on Wednesday morning, according to his management company, ATC Management. He was 56.

Irish police said a man in his 50s died after a single-vehicle motorcycle collision on Lower Road in Lucan, west of Dublin, shortly before 4:30 a.m. local time. Emergency services treated the rider at the scene, but he was pronounced dead a short time later. ATC Management confirmed the death and said the family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken.”

While some news reports described the crash as involving only the motorcycle, others cited unspecified sources indicating the motorcycle had collided with a car. Irish police have not publicly confirmed the exact circumstances and said the investigation is ongoing, with a request for witnesses to come forward.

Hansard was best known as the frontman of the rock band The Frames and for starring opposite Markéta Irglová in the 2007 film “Once,” for which they won the Oscar for best original song. He also appeared in the 1991 film “The Commitments” and released several solo albums, including “Didn’t He Ramble,” nominated for a Grammy for best folk album in 2016.
