At least 22 people, among them eight children, were killed on Wednesday as Israeli air and drone strikes swept across southern Lebanon, striking vehicles on the coastal highway south of Beirut and pummelling several villages in the interior. Lebanon's health ministry confirmed that seven vehicles were hit, three of them on the main arterial road linking the capital to Sidon. The dead included a woman and her two children in one of those strikes, while separate attacks in Arab Salim, Harouf and Roumin accounted for a further ten fatalities, the majority of them women and children. The Israeli military stated it had struck Hezbollah infrastructure, issuing evacuation orders for residents of six southern villages before widening the warnings to eight more on Thursday morning.

The violence unfolded on the eve of a new round of direct negotiations scheduled in Washington, a process brokered by the Trump administration as part of an effort to secure a diplomatic breakthrough between two states that have remained in a formal state of conflict since 1948. A US-mediated ceasefire announced in April has failed to hold, with Hezbollah and Israel continuing to exchange fire, largely concentrated in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military has described its operations as targeting "terror infrastructure", but the civilian toll — especially the number of children killed — has drawn sharp criticism from humanitarian organisations. In London, foreign policy analysts observed that the strikes risk alienating the Lebanese public and undermining the very political cover that the government in Beirut needs to sustain negotiations.
