Van Viet Truong, the 60-year-old owner of Hong Hung Asian Grocery in Sunshine, died on Wednesday afternoon, Victoria Police confirmed. He had been in a critical condition since Saturday, when he intervened in an alleged shoplifting on Hampshire Road.

According to police, Truong was attempting to assist a fellow retailer when he was allegedly pushed to the ground during a scuffle with the youths, striking his head. He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital but succumbed to his injuries days later.

Five teenagers, aged between 12 and 15, were charged with affray, violent disorder, and intentionally causing serious injury. One 13-year-old boy had his charges withdrawn. The remaining four have been remanded to appear at a children’s court. Detectives are considering upgrading charges following the death.

The incident has prompted calls from local traders and the Brimbank City Council for a sustained increase in police presence. Mayor Virginia Tachos described Truong as a pillar of the community, and council flags were lowered to half-mast. Premier Ben Carroll has indicated he will meet with traders to discuss safety concerns.
