A series of collisions on Highway 102 in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, on Wednesday involved 13 vehicles and sent four people to hospital. The first crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a northbound Chevrolet Express van crossed the grass median into southbound traffic, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The van struck a Toyota RAV4, became airborne, collided with a Buick Enclave, and then landed on a Chevrolet Colorado before coming to rest on its side. A Subaru Impreza subsequently collided with the Colorado. The drivers of the van, the RAV4, and the Colorado were taken to hospital with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Approximately 45 minutes later, while traffic remained stopped for the investigation, a second crash occurred just before Exit 4C southbound at Glendale Road. An International truck struck a GMC Sierra, a Ford Edge, a Jaguar XKR, and a GMC Terrain. The GMC was pushed into a Ford Mustang, which then struck a Hyundai Elantra, which in turn collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe. A passenger in the Ford Edge was transported to hospital, also with non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours as an RCMP collision reconstructionist examined the scene and debris was cleared. The investigation into the initial crash is ongoing. Police reminded motorists to maintain adequate space between vehicles and to stay alert for changing traffic conditions, particularly when approaching slowed or stopped traffic.
