Two Delta Air Lines jets came within dangerously close range of each other on Monday evening at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, prompting cockpit anti-collision alarms and an immediate federal investigation. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Delta Flight 2472 had just taken off when it crossed in front of Delta Flight 1568, which had initiated a go-around after its crew spotted an aircraft slow to exit the runway.

Flight 1568, arriving from Pittsburgh, had earlier been diverted to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for several hours due to severe weather. After aborting its landing, the flight was directed by air traffic control to turn right and climb to 4,000 feet, a vector that placed it directly in the path of Flight 2472, which had departed from a parallel runway and received the same climb instruction. Cockpit voice recordings capture one pilot exclaiming "My goodness" as onboard Resolution Advisory systems instructed both crews to take evasive action. Flightradar24 tracking data indicates that at the closest point, the aircraft were separated by approximately 1,800 feet horizontally and 600 feet vertically.

Delta Air Lines said the go-around was performed in accordance with established procedures and that its crews are extensively trained for such scenarios.
