A Moscow region court has sentenced a manager from The Walt Disney Company to two and a half years in a penal colony after customs officers discovered cannabis-infused gummy candies in his luggage at Sheremetyevo International Airport in January. Jugal Sudhir Daterao, a 46-year-old Indian national, was convicted on charges of drug possession and smuggling under Russia’s stringent narcotics laws. The Khimki City Court also imposed a fine of 30,000 roubles, according to multiple Russian state and independent media reports. Daterao, identified through social media as a corporate programmes manager at Disney, testified that the THC-laced marmalade had been legally prescribed by a physician in the United States to alleviate the after-effects of brain surgery.

Seen from Washington, the case bears the hallmarks of a wider Russian pattern: using drug-related arrests of foreign nationals as levers of diplomatic pressure. The presiding judge, Yelena Kotova, previously handled the 2022 conviction of American basketball star Brittney Griner, sentenced to nine years for trace amounts of cannabis oil before being exchanged in a prisoner swap. Daterao’s arrest in early 2026, at a moment of heightened geopolitical tension over Ukraine, inevitably invites comparison. While no official linkage has been asserted, analysts in London note that the Kremlin has long viewed the detention of Western-linked individuals as a source of potential bargaining chips, particularly in the absence of functioning consular channels.

The circumstances of the arrest add to the opacity. Russian authorities said Daterao arrived from Qatar and chose the “green corridor” for passengers with nothing to declare, only to be stopped for a random inspection. Independent Russian outlet Novaya Gazeta, citing leaked sources, reported that Daterao was travelling on personal business, a detail neither Disney nor the U.S. State Department has commented upon. His LinkedIn profile, which lists a role overseeing global corporate engagement, suggests an unlikely profile for a drug mule. The court rejected his medical-use defence, common in many Western jurisdictions but inadmissible under Russian law, which offers no exception for foreign prescriptions.

The verdict underscores the considerable risks facing business travellers to Russia, particularly those from nations the Kremlin considers hostile. While thousands of Western executives once commuted freely to Moscow, the arrest of a Disney manager—a company that itself paused theatrical releases in Russia after the 2022 invasion—will weigh heavily on corporate risk assessments. The sentence, though lighter than Griner’s, keeps Daterao in custody well beyond the symbolic threshold of a year, and an appeal appears unlikely to succeed. For now, his fate remains entangled in the fraught choreography of Russia’s strained relationship with the West.
