School Staff in Three Nations Face Sexual Offence Charges Involving Minors

A Malaysian teacher pleaded not guilty to physical sexual assault, a Brazilian ex-professor was indicted for rape, and a Swedish school counsellor with prior convictions faces new child sex crime charges.

On 24 June 2026, a 31-year-old contract teacher, Muhammad Izzudin Mohmad Asari, entered a not-guilty plea in the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court to two charges of physical sexual assault against a 13-year-old former student. The alleged acts occurred at a hotel on 4 June. The charges, brought under Section 14(a) and Section 14(d) of Malaysia’s Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, carry a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. The court set bail at RM12,000 with one surety, imposed a monthly reporting requirement at a police station in Besut, and scheduled the next case mention for 23 July.

In Brazil, the São Paulo judiciary has accepted charges against Alysson Leandro Barbate Mascaro, a former professor at the University of São Paulo’s law faculty, for rape, rape of a vulnerable person, sexual importuning, and sexual harassment involving former students and members of a study group. The defence, in a statement to CNN Brasil, described the decision as “merely preliminary” and not a definitive judgment on the facts, adding that the case remains under judicial secrecy. The university had removed Mascaro from his duties in December 2024 after an internal assessment found, according to the faculty’s statement at the time, strong indications of vertical sexual harassment.

In Sweden, a man previously convicted three times for child pornography offences—and who had worked as a school counsellor in Jönköping municipality—has been charged with new crimes, including attempted rape of a child and production of AI-generated child pornography. Swedish prosecutors state the offences took place in 2026 in Jönköping county and the county where he now resides. Investigators also found nearly 3,000 files of child sexual abuse material in his possession. The man’s prior convictions date to 2017 and 2022, when he was found with tens of thousands of illegal images and videos, according to SVT.

The cases illustrate distinct legal and institutional pathways. In Malaysia, the accused had previously taught the victim during primary school; the court’s bail conditions include monthly police reporting. In Brazil, the university’s precautionary suspension barred the professor from campus and from contacting complainants, while the criminal process now moves to a confirmation phase of the indictment. In Sweden, the fact that a three-times-convicted individual held a school counsellor position was reported by SVT, though no official comment from the municipality is included in the available material. The Malaysian case returns to court on 23 July; the Brazilian proceedings remain under seal; and the Swedish trial is expected to proceed under standard criminal procedure.
