
Toiling alongside travellers: JAL drafts Chinese humanoid robots to ease Haneda’s staffing crunch
The most striking emblem of Japan’s push to automate away a grinding labour shortage will begin shuttling cargo across the tarmac of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport from next month, when Japan Airlines launches a multi-year trial of humanoid ground-handling robots. In partnership with GMO AI & Robotics, a unit of the GMO Internet Group, the carrier will deploy two Chinese-built machines to lug containers, manipulate securing levers and load passenger baggage on one of the world’s busiest airfields. The experiment, scheduled to run until 2028, marks one of the most visible attempts by a major airline to replace human muscle with a bipedal workforce.
Viewed from Tokyo, the rationale is unambiguous. Japan’s aviation sector is fraying under the twin pressures of a precipitous decline in the working-age population and a record inbound tourism boom. Haneda alone channels more than 60 million passengers a year, with JAL’s 4,000 ground-handling employees straining against workloads that combine physical intensity and constricted spaces. Labour ministry data has long charted a demographic cliff; what was once an abstract anxiety is now visible in delayed turnarounds and exhausted ramp crews. The carrier’s president of ground services, Yoshiteru Suzuki, acknowledged that robotics would “inevitably” ease the burden on staff, while insisting that critical decisions would remain with humans.
In a demonstration for journalists, a 130-centimetre robot – manufactured by Hangzhou-based Unitree – unsteadily nudged a cargo container onto a conveyor belt before pausing to wave at an unseen colleague, a gesture that felt less like theatre and more like a promise of co-operation. The halting motion underscored the gap between laboratory agility and ramp-ready reliability, but also the urgency of the bet. Japanese officials have been reluctant to relax immigration rules sufficiently to fill manual roles, leaving automation as the preferred escape valve.
Analysts in Beijing note that the trial is simultaneously a shop window for China’s humanoid-robot industry, which has moved from industrial crawlers to upright machines capable of navigating human-scale environments. Unitree, better known for its quadrupedal robots, is among a cluster of firms aiming to export not just hardware but a vision of agile, workforce-augmenting automation. From Washington, where airport unions have already battled over biometric screening and autonomous baggage carts, the Haneda experiment will be read as a bellwether. If humanoid robots prove they can safely share tight apron spaces with aircraft, fuel trucks and ground personnel, the business case for wider deployment will strengthen rapidly.
JAL and GMO intend the robots to graduate from partial teleoperation to autonomous function, and eventually to take on cabin cleaning and the operation of ground-support equipment. The leap is far from trivial: airport aprons are sensorially chaotic, and a single collision between a machine and a jetbridge would erase months of cost savings. Yet the trajectory is clear. Japan’s experiment will be scrutinised by airline planners from Frankfurt to Singapore, where similar labour crunches intersect with ageing societies. Whether the humanoid rollout eases pressures or merely displaces them onto maintenance and oversight teams remains an open question. For now, Haneda’s new recruits – needing nothing more than a power socket and a software update – are quietly writing the next chapter in aviation’s long affair with automation.
