His patience, he warned, was running out. The remarks signal a tactical flexibility from Washington, but they also lay bare the distance still separating the two sides.

The context for this diplomatic manoeuvring is a war that began with massive US-Israeli air strikes on Iran on 28 February, followed by a largely observed ceasefire that has facilitated intermittent talks. Pakistan has acted as mediator, but negotiations have stalled after each side rejected the other’s terms. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, speaking from New Delhi, reiterated that his country has never sought nuclear weapons and that “conflicting messages” from Washington have deepened Tehran’s distrust.
