Chevrolet launches Sonic SUV in Latin America as Lexus and Jaecoo ready electric and hybrid rivals
Chevrolet’s new compact SUV arrives in Brazil and Argentina, while Lexus unveils a six-seat electric model for 2027 and Chinese brand Jaecoo tests a hybrid contender.
The most significant development this week for Latin American car buyers is the arrival of Chevrolet’s Sonic compact SUV, launched in Brazil with sales to follow in Argentina from June. Produced at GM’s Gravataí plant in Rio Grande do Sul, the Sonic is powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with direct injection, delivering 18.9 kgfm of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. With a coupé-like silhouette, 17-inch wheels, and a 392-litre boot, it slots between the Onix hatchback and the larger Tracker, occupying a sweet spot in the region’s most hotly contested segment.
Viewed from Buenos Aires, the Sonic represents a calculated bid to defend market share against an increasingly crowded field: the same week, a Chinese brand demonstrated just how fierce that competition has become. Journalists from CNN Brasil were invited to Wuhu, inland from Shanghai, to drive the Jaecoo 5 hybrid SUV over a demanding 600-kilometre route. The compact model, expected in Brazil below R$160,000 later this year, combines a petrol engine with electrification in a package designed to undercut established rivals on price while meeting tightening emissions standards.
Analysts in Milan are watching a different front. Lexus has just revealed the TZ, a six-seat all-electric SUV that will reach European dealerships in 2027. With a 95.8 kWh battery, a claimed range of 530 kilometres, and a cabin conceived as a “Driving Lounge”, the Japanese manufacturer aims to transform large battery-powered vehicles from mere status symbols into genuine long-distance family transport.
Its length of 5.10 metres and a wheelbase exceeding three metres place it squarely in the premium electric sector, a category still thin on practical multi-seat offerings. Closer to the ground, Chevrolet is hedging its bets. In Argentina, GEMSA, the official dealer in Tucumán, is staging a three-day test drive event showcasing the Spark EUV, the brand’s first fully electric model for the market.
The convergence of these launches — a conventional petrol SUV, a Chinese hybrid, a Japanese luxury EV, and an American electric city car — reveals a market in flux. Latin American consumers now face an unprecedented diversity of powertrain and price options. The question, viewed from São Paulo and Buenos Aires alike, is whether infrastructure and regulatory support can keep pace with the speed of product introduction.
