Milan judge imposes curfew on man accused of raping 16-year-old met via Instagram
A 22-year-old has been ordered to remain at home at night after a 16-year-old girl reported being raped on their first in-person meeting arranged through Instagram.
On Friday 17 July, a Milan judge placed a 22-year-old man under an overnight curfew (obbligo di dimora) after he was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl he met on Instagram. The prosecution had requested pre-trial detention, but Judge Giulia D'Antoni ordered a less restrictive measure, requiring the suspect to remain at home between 9pm and 7am. The judge acknowledged the gravity of the allegations and the risk of reoffending, according to both Mediaset and La Stampa.
The incident occurred on 29 March. The pair had exchanged messages on Instagram before agreeing to meet. Accounts differ on the exact initial meeting point: one report states they met in Piazza del Duomo before moving to the southern periphery, while another says they met outside a supermarket in that area. They walked to a nearby park where they began kissing consensually. When the 22-year-old attempted to go further, the girl said "I don't want to do this" and "I don't want to," but he allegedly ignored her and forced her into a double sexual assault. He then left her alone.
The victim first confided in a friend, then told her parents, who filed a police complaint. She provided investigators with the suspect's Instagram profile, and his identity was confirmed through her testimony and CCTV footage. The suspect, who has minor previous convictions for property crimes, has denied the allegations through his lawyer Massimo Grondona, claiming the encounter was consensual and that he did not perceive any dissent from the girl.
The case is being handled by prosecutor Marco Cirigliano of the Milan prosecutor's office's pool for the protection of minors and vulnerable persons. The suspect is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in the coming days. The judge's order, while not as severe as requested, reflects concerns about the potential for similar offences, as the judge did not rule out that the suspect could use the same pattern with other girls met on social media.
