Seven dead in head-on collision on Argentine provincial road

A head-on crash between a car and a truck on Route 192 in Buenos Aires province killed seven occupants of the car; one survivor is in critical condition.

Seven people died and one was critically injured in a head-on collision between a Chevrolet Chevette and a Mercedes-Benz truck on Friday night on Provincial Route 192, at kilometre 22 between Torres and Exaltación de la Cruz, Buenos Aires province, according to local authorities and medical sources.

The victims, all travelling in the car, were identified by investigators as Emiliano Ramón Moreyra, 34, and Tamara Albarenque, 35; Ludmila Fredes, 20, and Santiago Fredes, 19 — children of Albarenque from a previous relationship — and the couple’s three children: Milagros, 15, Martina, 11, and Josefina, 10. (One source reported slightly different ages for some victims, and sources gave conflicting given names for the youngest child, alternating between “Martina” and “Martín” as well as “Josefina” and “Josefina Moreyra”.) The sole survivor, Ignacio Sobot, 21, was taken to Hospital San José in Capilla del Señor and remains in intensive care with a guarded prognosis, medical sources report.

The truck driver, Juan Bautista Rodríguez, 22, and his companion, Mariano Humberto Desandi, 53, were unharmed and told investigators that the car was travelling in the wrong lane at the moment of impact, according to statements cited by local media. The crash occurred around 21:00 during a severe storm that reduced visibility, on a stretch of road described by authorities as having a pronounced curve and poor lighting. The cause remains under investigation; the case has been classified as homicidio culposo (culpable homicide) by the prosecutor’s office of Exaltación de la Cruz, which is awaiting accident reconstruction reports and autopsy results before determining responsibility.
