Ex-Governor of Guerrero Arrested Over Destruction of Evidence in Ayotzinapa Case

The former governor of the Mexican state of Guerrero, Ángel Aguirre Rivero, was arrested on 6 August and transferred to the Altiplano maximum-security prison, the federal attorney general’s office (FGR) announced. He stands accused of ordering the destruction of video evidence that could have shed light on the fate of 43 student teachers who vanished in Iguala in September 2014.
According to the FGR, two security cameras on the exterior of the Iguala Palace of Justice recorded the moment police officers intercepted a bus, Estrella de Oro 1531, carrying a group of the students on the night of 26 September. The footage was subsequently removed. A protected witness told investigators in January 2026 that the recordings were taken and delivered directly to Aguirre Rivero. A second protected witness stated in May 2026 that the then-governor, during a meeting with senior officials, ordered the elimination of any evidence linked to the events outside the courthouse. The FGR described the concealment as “a malicious and deliberately structured operation from the top of the state executive”.
The legal representative for the families of the disappeared, Isidoro Vicario Aguilar, said the defence team had not yet received official notification of the arrest and would not take a position. Some parents, however, reacted with cautious satisfaction. “We always said he was involved,” said Mario González, father of one of the missing students, adding that the detention would only be meaningful if the ex-governor provides information. Politicians from both the ruling Morena party and the opposition PAN urged that the arrest should not become a political distraction and must lead to truth and justice for the families.
Aguirre Rivero was governor of Guerrero at the time of the disappearances and resigned weeks later amid a national outcry. He had previously denied any knowledge of the videos or giving instructions to destroy them. The FGR says its investigation continues.
